Tongue Ring Sizing Basics: Gauge, Length, and Ball Size Explained

Learn the essentials of tongue piercing sizing, including why it is important. Elements include gauge, length, and ball size.

Tongue piercings have become popular expressions of individuality, rebellion, and sex positivity. If this type of body modification appeals to you, it is crucial to understand proper sizing for the jewelry that will be used in this oral art as well as the factors involved.

Why sizing matters

When your piercer performs a tongue piercing by making a vertical hole along the centerline of your tongue, you need to decide the optimal sizing for the jewelry to be inserted. By doing so, you can increase the chances of full healing, clear speech, and protection against oral problems such as chipped teeth and receding gums. Consulting with your piercer before your procedure will help to ensure the best results.

Gauge

Gauge is another word for the thickness of the barbell post. Typically, your piercer will opt for 14G (1.6 mm). This thickness is used because of the high density of the tongue muscle. Thinner tongue rings can cut into the tissue of the tongue under stress and can also migrate. By contrast, a 14G post provides structural stability.

Barbell length

When we discuss barbell length, we are talking about the wearable distance along the straight post between the two end beads, excluding threading and balls. The length you will need depends on the phase of your tongue piercing.

Tongue Piercing Barbell Length

For a fresh piercing, you will need ¾” to 7/8” (19 mm to 22 mm). This gives you additional room to accommodate the preliminary swelling that happens during the first couple of weeks. Once the piercing heals, you can downsize ½” to 5/8” (12mm to 16 mm). At this stage, you will minimize length to ensure that the jewelry fits flush against your tongue, keeping the bar from bumping against your teeth or scraping your gums.

Ball size

For tongue piercings, balls refer to the top and bottom beads that hold the barbell in place. Finding the right size will influence the comfort and overall safety of the titanium tongue rings or other jewelry you choose.

The top ball should range between 5 mm and 6 mm. With this size, the bead will not pull through the piercing hole. Moreover, it will remain comfortable as you eat and talk.

The bottom ball should be smaller, usually 4 mm to 5 mm. By decreasing its profile, there will be less pressure on your tongue. Additionally, there will not be as much contact with your mouth tissue or lower teeth.

Other specific jewelry choices can also be used to maximize the safety and comfort of your tongue piercing. Low-profile alternatives to standard ball ends include flat disks, M&M-shaped beads, and cabochons. These sit flatter against your mouth, reducing contact with enamel and lowering the chances of oral damage.

Tongue piercings have become a popular vehicle for people of all ages and cultures to express their uniqueness, rebel from the norm, and even heighten sensual pleasure. To protect the longevity and comfort of your piercing, take time to consider all of the important factors involved in tongue piercing jewelry sizing. When you do, the results will speak for themselves.
